According to DCD, AI chip startup Groq has deployed its infrastructure in an Equinix data center in Sydney, Australia, marking its first Asia-Pacific expansion. The deployment uses 4.5MW of capacity and leverages Equinix Fabric for interconnection services. CEO Jonathan Ross noted the world lacks enough compute for widespread AI development, positioning this as part of Groq’s global expansion strategy. About half of Groq’s two million users are based in Asia Pacific, who will now access reduced latency inference through GroqCloud. The company previously secured $1.5 billion from Saudi Arabia in February 2025 and aims to establish 12 more data centers in 2026 after already setting up 12 to date.
The Asia-Pacific push makes perfect sense
Here’s the thing: when half your users are in a region, you’d better have infrastructure there. Groq’s move to Sydney isn’t just expansion for expansion’s sake—it’s addressing a fundamental latency problem. AI inference needs to be fast, and crossing oceans adds milliseconds that matter. But what’s really interesting is the timing. Groq just got that massive $1.5 billion Saudi investment earlier this year, and they’re already putting it to work.
